According to Wikipedia, in Ireland, it was traditional to entrust the victim with an “important letter” to be given to a named person. That person would read the letter, then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. The letter when opened contained the words “send the fool further”.
A bit like being sent from one teacher to another in school to ask for ‘a long stand’? 😂

Indeed yes! Another memory returns… My classroom had windows facing the road so when school inspector arrived, it was my job to ask pupil deliver a yellow pencil to teacher next door. That teacher would then ask a pupil to pass it on down the line. The pencil would eventually arrive back to me.
Inspector actually waited in car, as if allowing this process to be completed! Perhaps I’ll write a full post about this.
